When we formed PFA we knew donating equipment
would be vital as schools need a way to allow students to develop
the skill level to pass fitness tests. We had planned to buy existing
fitness equipment already being manufactured for schools and were
surprised to learn most equipment was not recommended for use with
children under the age of 12. We saw that as bolting the gate after
the horse got out. We needed children exercising safely and correctly
as early as grade one. Therefore, working with Craig Cunningham,
M.S. UCLA, who has planned playground sites since 1963, a new type
of equipment was developed exclusively for PFA. The PFA equipment
is specifically designed to address all the deficient areas where
children fail fitness tests. Addressing upper body, lower body, abdominal
strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. This is a freestanding
structure of seven work out areas permanently installed outdoors
on the school grounds.
Many of the stations are built at a pitched angle which allows children
as early as grade one to use the apparatus safely and correctly however
also enables use for children of all ages and adults as well. Many
schools open their campus after hours and weekends as sort of a free
health club for the community. This equipment is royal blue and cardinal
red. It is aluminum steel and platisol coated which prevents the
metal from conducting temperature. It does not heat in the summer
or chill in the winter. The bars are lightly textured with prevents
little hands from slipping off and improves the comfort and grip.
It is custom built for PFA by Landscape Structures Inc. This company
ranks number one not just in the U.S., but globally for safety and
quality. You simply can not get higher quality equipment. The equipment
is used during the school day in tandem with the PFA curriculum that
provides a series of games, by grade level, that interact with the
equipment. The games are fun for the students and allow the equipment
to become a release time activity as well as a physical education
lesson. This equipment is not for sale. It is only donated to schools
with have demonstrated a clear commitment to integrate the curriculum
and entire fitness in education experience into their school plan.
Equipment does not get kids fit and form positive attitudes about
lifestyle habits. People do.
